Obit-Majid DadoMajid Hanna Dado

Majid Hanna Dado was born on December 29, 1960 in Kuwait City, Kuwait to the late Hanna Hermiz Dado and Amal Francis Bodi. From birth, he was a boy filled with life. Majid loved swimming and serving at Maryam Al-Aathr’a church in Baghdad. Shortly after graduation, he arrived in Michigan in 1980 with his family and established a new life.

In 1987, he married Haifa Konja. Majid and Haifa were a loving couple and best friends. They had three children, one girl and two boys. His first priority was to assure his family was cared for and accomplished this by working rigorously. His family and friends adored being in his presence because of his loving personality and hilarious jokes.

Majid was humble, selfless and lived to the fullest with no regrets. During his last few years, he mentored his sons at the family business and encouraged his daughter during her studies. His children constantly made him proud and he motivated them to achieve their dreams. He admired spending time at home with family, cooking with his wife, gardening, and gathering with friends at Shenandoah Country Club.

Majid passed away on May 21, 2015 at the young age of 54. He is survived by his wife, Haifa Dado, and his children, Cynthia, Johnathon and Austin. He also leaves behind his mother, Amal Dado; brothers, Karim (Azhar) and Wasfi (Fadya) Dado; sister, Suzan (David) Bally; as well as four nephews and six nieces.

Dad, your seemingly premature departure feels unreal, but we know your spirit continues to radiate amongst us. We will always recollect your contagious smile and cherish our joyful memories together. Now, you are eternally living in Heaven with Jidu, forever leaving a mark on our hearts. We love and miss you more than you can imagine. Until next time…

Faraj (Frank) Roumayah

Obit-Frank RoumayahFaraj (Frank) Roumayah was born on January 12, 1924, and died on May 19, 2015.

Frank lived a long and full life, married 65 years to his wife Amira. They raised seven children together: Al (Debbie), the late Rick (Pam), Gary (Nancy), Steve (Paula), Karen, Michele (Randy), and Ken (Kim). Frank had 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A butcher by trade, Frank owned multiple businesses. Frank enjoyed his work and loved his family. Frank’s family was everything to him. He treated his daughters/sons-in-law as if they were his own.

He was a selfless man who was always watching out for others.

Frank was quite the handyman. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t fix or put together himself and he instilled this skill into his sons.

He was a character indeed. Recently before passing, while speaking with his third eldest he jokingly said, “I wonder what kind of job I’ll have in Heaven.”

Rest in peace, husband, father, grandpa, brother-in-law, uncle, friend.

Ibtisam Salmo Setto

Obit-Ibtisam SettoIbtisam Salmo Setto was welcomed into the glorious gates of Heaven on June 5, 2015 at the age of 53. Our beloved Ibtisam was born in Telkaif, Iraq, to Zia and Najiba Salmo on March 29, 1962.

She was blessed with a large and loving family. Ibtisam was a devoted wife of 29 years to Loay Setto, a wonderful mother to Brandon Setto, an affectionate daughter, a loving daughter-in-law, a caring sister, a thoughtful sister-in-law, and a compassionate aunt to all of her and Loay’s nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. She created a beautiful family by the grace of God with Jesus at the center of her life. Although she has departed us here on earth, she has left a legacy of love, tenderhearted compassion and generosity in all of our hearts.

Ibtisam was an amazingly optimistic person with a beautiful smile. Always having a kind word, her compassionate demeanor and expression of love to each person in her life made us all feel cherished. Ibtisam truly appreciated and enjoyed her life with her family. She had the most remarkable garden, a stunning Christmas display, and she could cook better than any gourmet chef. Ibtisam’s love radiated throughout the family; she always made sure that all of her family felt admired and loved.

Ibtisam’s elderly parents, Zia and Najiba Salmo, and her in-laws, Manuel and Salima Setto, could always count on her to provide support and be attentive to their needs. Ibtisam was an intricate part of our lives and will forever be missed.

Our family will always miss Ibtisam as she was a true inspiration to live your life to the fullest, and not only for yourself, but for the people you love. Her charming smile will forever be imprinted on our hearts. Ibtisam was a beautiful rose that blossomed into our angel in Heaven.

Salim Issrail Abro

Obit-Salim Issrail AbroOur Baba, Salim Issrail Abro, was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on July 8, 2015. Salim was born on April 1, 1932 in Telkaif, Iraq. He was the rock of our family.

Salim was married 60 years to his wife, Najat. They raised six children together: Nawal (Ablhad), Nail (Sarah), Jason (Hedeel), Anam (Basil), Joanne (Mazin), and Andy (Donna). He was a grandfather to 21 and a great-grandfather to 10.

Thank you for teaching us everything we know and thank you for shining your everlasting light on us. Baba, we will forever be in debt to you for everything you have ever done for us: The life lessons you taught us, the constant jokes and laughter you shared with us, the endless stories you always told us, and the loving smile you always provided us with will remain in our hearts forever. Until we are all together again, we love you unconditionally and we miss you greatly.

Ziad Shammami

Obit-Ziad Shammami -Ziad Shammami was born on May 2, 1950 and died on June 20, 2015.

Having battled cancer for a year and a half, he fought strong and hard to stay alive. But God had other plans for Ziad that needed him to leave here much too soon.

Ziad passed away the day before he would have celebrated his 34th wedding anniversary with his wife, Inam. They raised four children together — Natalie, Julian, Joseph and Narmeen — and devoted all their time to their kids.

Ziad owned his own business for more than 30 years and enjoyed working. His family always came first and they were everything to him, as he was to them. Ziad was humble, generous, kind, honest, and most of all charming … maybe it was his good looks, but everyone who met him fell in love with him instantly.

He built a legacy that his wife and kids will carry on, from his work ethic to the family values he instilled in his children. It goes without saying that his children could not have been led by a better example than Ziad.

He was an amazing husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and mentor anyone could possibly ask for.

RIP Ziad Aziz Shammami … you worked so hard for so long, it is time for you to rest!

‘Til the day we meet again … in our hearts is where we will keep you Baba!

Paul Dabish
xObit-Paul DabishPaul Dabish was born on November 3, 1943 in Detroit, the second of four sons to Salman and Mary Dabish.

Following his graduation from Detroit Cathedral High School, he enrolled at Wayne State University to pursue a degree in geology. Paul was drafted into the United States Army and after graduating college, he served his country honorably.

In 1984 Paul married Janet and became a wonderful step-father to Sandi and Tracey.

He worked in his family’s business, MRA market, until it was sold in the early 1990s. Following the sale of MRA market, Paul worked for Valley Industries until he retired in 2005. That year he became a loving grandfather when Tracey and her husband Stephen had Duncan.

Paul remained a caring and loving son, husband, father and grandfather throughout his life. Paul stayed active in the community after retirement, including his membership to the American Legion.

On September 21, 2015 God called Paul home at the age of 71. He is loved and missed by us all.

Muwafak Antoun Nafso
Obit--Muwafak Antoun NafsoMuwafak Antoun Nafso was born on February 15, 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq to the late Daoud and Jamila Nafso. He was one of 12 children and loved his siblings and parents unconditionally.

In 1967, he attended Wayne State University with a student visa. His mother sent him to America for a better future and he also came to pursue the love of his life, our mother, Najat Dallo Nafso. Our parents married on October 28, 1968 and had five children.

He was the first in his immediate family to arrive in America and helped his siblings and mother come to this country. He worked for a manufacturing company and later started a business with his brother. In 1994, our parents started their own business in Detroit, which they sold in 2008.

Muwafak was hard working and sacrificed endless work hours to provide for his family. He was generous and gave all he had to his children and anyone that asked for help. He encouraged us all to get an education and we all completed a degree in the medical field or human resources.

Our father was absolutely adored by his children and nine grandchildren. We shared special memories at weekly family gatherings, holidays, birthdays and vacations. He was a man of faith and attended mass every Saturday evening at St Joseph Chaldean Church in Troy.

He was honest, quiet, non-judgmental, respected by all who knew him, and had a laid-back personality. He enjoyed spending time with relatives and traveling, and he loved horses and cigars. He encouraged us all to live in the moment, be grateful for life, and have peaceful relationships with one another. His laughter was contagious and his love pure.

Dad, we are certain the Lord welcomed you to heaven giving you eternal love and life with late family members including your parents and brother Salman. Now you live as our guardian angel, cherished and loved forever, always in our hearts!

obit-Naima BahouraNaima Poota Bahoura
Naima Poota Bahoura, born on February 1, 1929, passed away on October 2, 2015.

She was the beloved wife of the late Jarjis Bahoura, and mother of the late Mikhail (Anwar), Amira Kassab (Basim), Almas Jaddou (Nazar), Eddie (Raieda), Iklas Bashi (Maher), Iman Secreto, and Barbara Matti (Joseph). She was adored, loved and inspired by her late mother, Wardani Kassab Poota, her 23 grandchildren, her 24 great grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, and her entire extended family.

Naima was a humble servant of Christ and His Blessed Mother. She died peacefully and ever so gracefully on the Feast Day of the Guardian Angels, on the first Friday of the month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for which she had a 64-year devotion.

Naima was truly dedicated to her strong faith, her family, all her relatives and friends. The Lord granted her great joy and peace as she carried out, for His sake, all the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy throughout her blessed life. Everywhere she walked, equipped with the Light of Christ radiating from her perpetual smile, she authentically and deeply lived out the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.

It is the longing of Naima’s children and family that anyone wishing to offer a donation in her honor would send checks made out to Adopt A Refugee and in the memo line, please make sure to write MERCI (Medical and Emergency Relief for Christian Iraqis). Contact Rafed Yaldo for details at (248) 762-4210.

Obit-Sahira KonjaSahira Sesi Konja
Sahira Sesi Konja extended her arms to the Lord as she entered the gates of Heaven on October 12, 2015. She was born on October 23, 1949 to the late Salim and Hannyia Sesi.

Sahira was strong, passionate, opinionated, hardworking and selfless. In 1965, Sahira married Michael Konja and in May the two recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Michael and Sahira have five children: Faye, Johnny (Cassie), Sandy (Wisam), Cindy (Nash), and Michael Jr. They have six grandchildren: Sarina, Kayla, Shawn, Cassidy, Chloe and Aubrey.

At the age of 16 Sahira began to take sewing classes merely out of interest. Soon after, curiosity turned into a calling. Her passion and dedication turned her hobby into a career. In 1984 Sahira and her daughter Faye opened the doors to Konja’s Bridal, one of the most well-renowned bridal stores in Michigan. Konja’s Bridal became her empire for over 30 years. She made sure that every bride walked out of the door with a big smile on her face as she carried out the dress of her dreams.

Sahira was charitable and loved to give to those in need. She was always eager to help others and always let her generosity shine through. She was very determined and didn’t let anything, whether it be illness or simply just bad timing, stand in her way of lending a helping hand.

Mom, you will be dearly missed by everyone who was graced by your uplifting presence, but your legacy will live on forever. The Sunday family dinners that were so important to you will never be the same. Your overflowing love remains in the hearts of all those whom you encountered. You are our beautiful angel now shining your light upon us. Rest in peace Mom, you will always be in our hearts.

DJ was adored for his loving, gracious and generous nature. Held up by his parents and siblings as the rock of the family, DJ’s great gift was creating memorable moments and savoring them with his loved ones. DJ had an uncanny ability to take a genuine interest in each person he encountered. His truly selfless approach to life extended to all his friends and their families.

DJ received a B.A. in Political Economy, with high honors, from James Madison College, MSU in 1994 and his J.D. from the U of Law School in 1997, where he was senior editor of the Michigan Law Review. He was a board member of Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation and active in the Birmingham Brother Rice High School Leadership Institute.

Obit-Salima AraboSalima Arabo

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You’re always at our side.

Salima Arabo was born on November 15, 1927 in Iraq. She was the only child of the late Ibrahim Yaldoka and Khokhi Samona Yaldoka. She passed away on January 11, 2016 at the age of 88.
Salima lived a beautiful life with faith in God being the center of her life.
Salima loved her home being filled with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; we will miss our family gatherings. She enjoyed going out to lunch with her daughters, spending time with her friends and playing bingo. She had a beautiful smile, humble personality and a great sense of humor. She loved to cook and always helped anyone in need.
Salima was a devoted wife of 68 years to Latif Arabo. They were a loving couple and best friends. They had six children together: Sabah (Suham) Arabo, Salah (Samira) Arabo, Falah (Amira) Arabo, Rabah Arabo, Aida (the late Karim) Khamarko and Rayda (Samir) Jajo.
Salima was a wonderful grandmother of 21 and a great-grandmother of 17.
Cherished memories of our time together will always live in our hearts. She has left a legacy of love, compassion and generosity in all of our hearts. We love you and miss you every day!

Sabiha Barno
Obit-Sabiha BarnoSabiha Barno was born in 1939 in a little town in northern Iraq located at the foot of Alqosh. She was the oldest child of 12 born to Deacon Sadik Yako Barno and the late Agatha Shimon Pollath.
She lived in a modest house built of stone and plaster, adjacent to the thick stone walls of St. George Church. As large as those stones were, they did not prevent the carols and hymns from reaching the ears of the residents living in the ancient homes that surrounded the church and overlooked the schoolyard and the tomb of St. Michael Nuhedrian. Residing close to the church had a great influence on Sabiha and her devotion to Catholicism. She visited the church daily even when she was ill and tired.

At age 15, Sabiha was playing with her friends at St. Michael’s Square when the parents of Sulaiman Hanna Barno approached to ask for her hand in marriage. She got married and gave birth to five girls and six boys, one of whom drowned at a young age more than four decades ago in the little river of Bandwaya Village.

Sabiha took the daily house chores upon herself as well as the farm work. She enjoyed sewing and dressing dolls in traditional clothes of the people of Alqosh. She memorized many prayers, poems and songs that were performed acapella by young men and women at weddings, as well as those recited on sad occasions.

Years passed and Sabiha lived in an old, rundown house with cold rooms that surrounded a small garden. A cypress tree in the middle seemed to reach the sky. It was home to hundreds of birds that sang for her every morning. The birdsong met the ring of the church bells to create a symphony.

On December 26, 2015 Sabiha fell ill with influenza due to living in those cold rooms. She was taken to a hospital in Dohuk but her health worsened. She was urgently transferred to intensive care, where she laid for eight days until she passed away on January 3, 2016.

Sabiha was known as a caring person. She was extremely social, always talking and asking about people while attending all the local occasions, whether it be a funeral to offer her condolences or a wedding to celebrate with her fellow townspeople.

“She was like a burning candle in our lives. Her light was extinguished so suddenly and unexpectedly,” said her son, Jalal. “If I were to visit Alqosh now, I do not know how I will enjoy or appreciate the breeze from the mountains, which brings with it the aroma of the amaryllis and hollyhocks. I will never again enjoy the warm, fresh bread that was made by her tireless hands.”
He continued, “I can only imagine that her friends, neighbors, the cypress tree, the archaic stones, and those birds that she fed — while watching her granddaughter Chanel — will miss her dearly. I believe that the heavenly choirs of angels will lift her to eternal paradise. We are honored to call her our mother because of her endless love and everlasting passion toward others.”

Sabiha was laid to rest in the graveyard of the grandparents, buried in the soil of her beloved Alqosh.

Salim Mansour Kathawa
Obit-Salim KathawaSalim Mansour Kathawa, age 96, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on January 15, 2016. He was born on September 10, 1919, in Telkaif, Iraq to Mansour and Nanoo (Abro) Kathawa and lived his life as a God-fearing man.

Salim was married to Badria Aziz Esso on July 20, 1947; together they had nine children, 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Salim was a schoolteacher in several cities in Iraq, primarily in Telkaif where he made lifelong relationships with many teachers and students, until he immigrated to Detroit in 1971. Salim attended middle school in Mosul, sought higher education in Baghdad and returned to his hometown, Telkaif, to teach.

Salim came to love life in the United States and felt blessed that the Chaldean community had found a home in this country. He was a true believer in the American dream. Education remained very important to Salim as he settled his family into the United States – his two youngest children and every grandchild of age has attended college. In the United States, Salim worked with his sons who all became successful entrepreneurs.

He will forever be remembered, loved and respected as Ustath. The generation that was blessed to be taught by Salim went on to become entrepreneurs, community leaders and leaders of the faith community including priests, deacons, and three bishops – Mar Ibrahim, Mar Kassab and Mar Hanna.

Salim’s hobbies included gardening, reading and writing. Some of his favorite times were spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren sharing stories about his home country and family history. Salim will be greatly missed but always remembered by his family and friends.

Salim is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Badria; children, Riyadh (Salwa), Raad (Thaira), Flora (Arshed), Fatin, Ramiz (Jackie), Heiam, Jimmy (Sandy), Shadah (Justin), and Richard (Lyssette); 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Kadaha Jarjosa

Obit-Kadaha JarjosaKadaha Jarjosa, who was born on September 24, 1923, passed away on January 13, 2016.

She was truly an icon in the Chaldean community. As one of the first Chaldeans to arrive in the U.S. in 1936 on the Queen Mary, she touched and inspired any person who crossed her path.

Kadaha was a strong and uplifting woman who was filled with life and laughter. No one ever came to her without leaving happier. She was the life of the party and was rarely seen without a smile on her face. Her family was the center of her world and she never ceased to stress how important the value of family was. She taught us the true meaning of love and sacrifice.

She was a God-fearing woman who devoted much of her time to Christ and His Church. She was known for the pilgrimages that she often organized to various churches and shrines throughout the country.

Kadaha undoubtedly served the purpose that God created her for. She lived a fruitful life and will forever be remembered for her faith, generosity and love. She will be missed but her legacy will live on through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We love you, Kadaha. Rest in peace.

Shammama Denha Delly

Obit-Shammama Denha DellyShammama Denha Delly, affectionately known as Nana, was born on March 7, 1923 in Telkaif, Iraq to Jargis and Regina Denha. God granted Shammama the grace of a holy death on February 29, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona. She was laid to rest on March 5 in Southfield, Michigan.

Shammama was preceded in death by her husband, Shamasha Dickow Delly, son Samir Delly, and her sisters Warina Cholak, Ghazala Denha and Tawitha Cholak.

She leaves behind her children, Sabah, Louis, Saad, Bashar, Adib, Saher and Asma Cholak. Also surviving are her sister Saadia Cholak and her brother Joseph Denha. She also leaves behind 26 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren who loved her dearly.

Nana was passionately loved by her family, friends and all those who were blessed to be touched by her life. God blessed Nana with a deeply-rooted Catholic faith. Joining Sacred Heart Society at a young age of 13 and after joining the St. Dominic Society at 52, she was involved in much of the Church’s life. She was active in many charities as well as other religious societies. She loved the clarity of the Church’s teachings. She treasured the Church’s ceremonies, especially the beauty of her ancient worship of Aramaic. She trusted the power of the Sacraments as the means of salvation – as Christ working within her for her salvation.

She left a legacy of one who loved the Lord. She was widowed at 52 and raised eight children with what she called “Fear of the Lord.”  She made sure the Lord was present in thoughts, words and actions of her children and grandchildren.

Nana had a genuine way of reaching into the deepest part of the human heart and soul. We could have enjoyed another hundred years with her children and grandchildren. She was devotedly cared for and treated like a queen by her daughter Asma. We know how Heavenly Father has prepared a special place for her.

As God has created all of us in His likeness and image, Nana was a masterpiece we all strive to emulate. She lived a fruitful life and will always be remembered for her faith, love and generosity. She will be sorely missed. We ask all to remember her in their prayers.

We love you Nana. Bless that perfect union with God and until we see you again and rejoice with you in the communion of saints.

-Shammama’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Obit-Ray Dallo (just use top left) MG_3202Ray Dallo

Ray lived a life of God for all of the 32 years that he lived. He was born in Baghdad on October 28, 1983 and died in Michigan on June 28, 2016. He peacefully joined his two favorite people, Jido Sabah and Bibi Jamila, in heaven. He is survived by his parents Raad and Sana, and his siblings Rand, Rafat, Ranen and Ronnie.

Ray spent most of his life back home working in a store with his father and uncles while never missing a Sunday mass. After coming to the States, he unselfishly started working and providing for the family so that his siblings could focus on school. Being the oldest fit him very well. He was and will always be our protector. Our birthday and Christmas gifts will be missed as he made it a hobby to be everyone’s Santa.

Ray’s pure and big heart will be missed by everyone. He loved all of his uncles, aunts and cousins and was kind to everyone. His delicious barbecue, funny jokes and sweet talks will never be forgotten. He loved serving people and enjoyed their company.

Ray was not fit for Earth as he was diagnosed with heart failure at the age of 26. He was resilient in continuing the same life he was living and never complained because of his strong faith. He was not guided properly with his condition and in 2014 suffered a massive stroke after a complex surgery. If it was not for his will to live, he would not have made it. A few months later, Ray was able to come home but with more medical issues and in a wheelchair.

Ray was not done there. He improved at home and lived a modified and exciting life. He knew everything that he was able to start doing again was a blessing. He loved hearing Fr. Fadi Philip’s voice every Sunday and liked to be out. Simple things, even cold water, meant the world to him. Everyone was inspired by him and his courage. You might have seen him around at churches, malls or restaurants and seen his big smile.

Ray lived a short but a meaningful life and fought hard until his body said no more. He will never leave our hearts and will forever be with us.

-Rand and Rafat Dallo

Obit-Hekmat MaryHekmat Yousif Mary

Hekmat Yousif Mary departed this life on July 7, 2016 at age 79 after a courageous fight with heart disease. The funeral was held on July 9 at Mother of God Chaldean Catholic Church. Family received condolences at St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church.

The loving husband of Ramzia Brikho for more than 50 years, the couple was blessed with three children and five grandchildren. As an accountant in the old country and a businessman over here, he took pride in his acquaintances. In return they highly valued his honesty and humility.

Hekmat was an amazing, caring person with a positive outlook on life. In the hospital, where he stayed for more than a year, even when he could not speak he never failed to smile whenever he opened his eyes. He was a generous soul with a strong will and faith in God following the path of his father, who was an outstanding Chaldean deacon.

Hekmat, we will always love you. We miss you, but you won’t be forgotten. Your memory is indelible.

Brothers Pass Away Weeks Apart

Sabri Francis Garmo

Sabri Francis Garmo was born on May 1, 1928 in the village of Telkaif, Iraq, to Francis “Mister” and Shosha Garmo. He was the third of five children: brothers Putrus, Sabah, and Gorgis (George), and one sister, Sabria. Their father lovingly went by the nickname of “Mister” because he was an English teacher and translator at the local school while Shosha was at home tending to their children.

As a sharp young man, Sabri and his brother Putrus worked for Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC) because they both were fluent in English. On February 10, 1952, Sabri married Nazhat Zaia Abbo in Telkaif. Shortly after, the two moved to Baghdad where Sabri worked as a construction manager for a German company called Intercontinental. His siblings, Sabah and Sabria, lived with them while they were both attending college in the city. His brother, Fr. George, was a dean at the seminary in Mosul until 1960 when he moved to the United States.

Sabri passed away on July 11, 2016.

Sabri and Nazhat were blessed to raise 10 beautiful children — Inam, Bushra, Jamal, Thaira, Kamal, Laith, Nuha, Namir, Linda, and Dalcey — all born in Iraq. By 1979, the entire family was living in United States, including Sabri’s parents and siblings.

Sabri and Nazhat’s first home was in Southfield, where his brother Bishop Garmo built Mother of God Church. Sabri, with his brothers, worked diligently to revive the Southfield chapter of Knights of Columbus while also serving on the Board of Directors for Southfield Manor. He opened a grocery store in 1979 with his sons called Shopper’s Valley. The store is in Wyandotte and is still run by the family.

Sabri’s beloved Nazhat passed on August 13, 2002 after 50 wonderful years together.

Sabri and Nazhat’s most enduring legacy is their family, which continues to grow. Much of Sabri’s time was devoted to documenting the Garmo family history, best shown by the completion of a full family tree.

His children lovingly remember him “as a loving father with an infectious laughter and great sense of humor. His memory and smile will forever live on in our hearts.”

Sabah Francis Garmo

The Lord is my light and my salvation. Psalm 27:1

SabahSabah Francis Garmo was born on November 12, 1938 in the village of Telkaif, Iraq to Francis and Shoshi Garmo. He was the youngest of five children. His brothers Putrus, Gorgis (Archbishop George Garmo) and Sabri have since passed. He is survived by his sister Sabria.  Born into an educated family, Sabah’s father was an English teacher and translator, known to his students as “Mister.”

Sabah immigrated to America in 1963 where he met American-born MaryAnn Dezenski. They married on May 24, 1964 and had six children: Julie, Mark (Rita), Susie (Hans), Ronnie (Vanessa), Zena (Noel) and Jennifer (Chris) and nine grandchildren: Morgan, Rachael, Mark, Elizabeth (Libby), Elayna, George, Declan, Alexandra and Alana.   Sabah and MaryAnn raised their family in metro-Detroit while operating businesses in White Lake and Detroit.  Sabah eventually retired as a long-time grocer and enjoyed spending his time serving the church as a Shamasha, (Deacon) and with the Knights of Columbus where he served as the Grand Knight in different years.

Sabah loved his Catholic faith and adored his family.  He also enjoyed traveling and one of his most memorable trips was visiting the Holy Land on a Pilgrimage. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends. When he was not hanging out with his buddies, playing khoun kahn, at Silhouette  (Later LifeTime) or walking at Drake Park, he was grilling for his grandchildren or watching TV Land featuring his favorite programs: Matlock, The Andy Griffith Show and any John Wayne movie.

Although he is now living eternal life in Heaven with Our Lord and Savior, he forever lives in our hearts and memories.

Mario Mumtaz Cholak

obit-mario-cholakMario Mumtaz Cholak was born on March 27, 1991 in Michigan to Mumtaz and Asmahan (Delly) Cholak.  God called Mario home on September 2, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was laid to rest on September 9, 2016 in Southfield, Michigan.

Mario leaves behind his wife, Brenely, his son Mario Jr., his father Mumtaz Cholak and his mother, Asmahan (Delly) Cholak.  Also surviving are his brothers, Dominic, Donovan and Marcellino Cholak.  He also leaves behind many family and friends who loved him dearly.

Mario was truly a gift from God, a gift given to love, help and uplift us all.  He lived life to the fullest each day, impacting every life he touched in a paramount way.  With his contagious smile and generous spirit, Mario was a beacon shining God’s light.  He exercised the Corporal Works of Mercy that are found in the teachings of Jesus.  He visited the sick, visited the imprisoned, buried the dead, gave alms to the poor, sheltered the homeless, gave drink to the thirsty, and fed the hungry.  In fact, the last meal Mario had, he shared with a homeless man for whom he had provided shelter for the last seven years.  He was selfless, always thinking of others.

Truly blessed by God’s gifts, Mario was a talented, creative and enlightened artist.  Mario pursued music since he was 13 years old and living in his native Southfield.  He moved to Phoenix in 2004 and began writing rap and techno songs shortly afterwards.  Mario’s stage name was Filo and he worked with many well-known artists.  His faith was always a strong motivator.  He always said, “Without God, there is nothing.”  Inspired by his faith and love of God, Mario dedicated his song “Why Wouldn’t He?” to God.

Mario was a true pillar of faith.  God blessed Mario with a love for his family and friends.  He sought to show that love and to share the blessing of the faith he treasured.  He was devoted to Brenely and was absolutely in love with his soon-to-be 3-year-old Mario Jr. (“J.R.”).  Mario was so happy with and proud of his family.  He cherished his mom, dad, and brothers.  Mario was always aware of just how precious life was.  He never let a day go by without making sure he made a difference for the better in someone’s life.

Mario had a genuine way of reaching into the deepest part of our heart and warming our soul.  He is certainly “gone too soon”. Our heavenly Father has prepared a special place for our sweet and beloved Mario.

We know that God has created us all in His image and likeness.  In Mario, God created such a masterpiece that we can only strive to emulate.  Mario lived a short but fruitful life and will always be remembered for his faith, love and generosity.  He will be missed sorely.  Please remember him in prayer.

Connecting Cultures: Ethnic Chambers Come Together

$

0

Known as one of the most diverse regions in the country, one Wayne County city was taking on the issue of diversity in business when the Livonia Chamber of Commerce hosted its first-ever Connecting Cultures luncheon on Sept. 8.

“This was designed to give the attendees not just an introduction but an understanding of the various ethnicities doing business in the region,” said Dan West, president and CEO of the Livonia Chamber. “This is extremely valuable as experts have noted the communities and companies that do the best job in welcoming foreign investment will have the best chance for future economic development.”

The sold-out event, designed like a talk show, was held at School Craft College VisTaTech Center and hosted by Fox 2 Anchor and Reporter Rup Raj.

“One of the most common questions I get asked is, ‘is Rup your real name?’ and I often say, ‘no my real name is Steve. I made Rup up,’” said Raj with laughter from the audience. “Clearly people have questions about one another because we are all so different but often when we have culture differences people are afraid to ask questions and political correctness has gone too far. We cannot look at someone and feel comfortable to ask simple questions about race, religion or backgrounds … at the end of the day … we are basically the same … there are great things going on right here in Livonia and this event is a wonderful starting point.”
On the stage were Van Nguyen, executive director of the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APAC); Reinhard Lemke, attorney and senior advisor to American Chamber of Commerce in Germany; Martin Manna, president of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce/Chaldean Community Foundation; and Paul Ureste, executive committee and board member of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Some businesses wanted to know what needs to happen to better engage chambers. “Be patient,” said Van Nguyen. “Sometimes it’s a new world for a first-time attendee and you may have to attend four or five events before you can make an impact on the culture and understand the business process.”

“It’s different in some ways and similar in others,” said Lemke. “When it comes to negotiations there are differences. There is longevity in doing business. It’s about long-term relationships, not short-term gains. Germany is like today what America was like years ago when businesses were family-owned. It is about building trust.”

All noted that relationships are essential but you have to understand the culture. “Sometimes Germans come off as rude because they get to the point first and don’t make a joke first. I try to find jokes. However, I am not very good at telling jokes,” Lemke said with a chuckle.

In the Chaldean community, business was focused on an image problem. “We look at ourselves as a resource to educate others on who are the Chaldeans,” said Manna. “We want people to know the investments Chaldean have made in America. This predates the Arabs and Kurds, for example.  We in the Eastern Rite maintain our own identity although united with Rome. We speak the Aramaic language. We launched the Chaldean Chamber because there was a public perception that we don’t hire outside our community and that we don’t pay taxes, for instance, and so we wanted to change the conversation and set the record straight.”

Chaldeans have been part of the business evolution in Metro Detroit for nearly a century. Italians owned most of the food and beverage business in Detroit that were eventually sold to the Jewish community and then the Chaldean community, primarily in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Manna explained the diverse business portfolio of the Chaldean community. “They are in the wireless business, the hotel business, restaurant business and, yes, still in the food business,” he noted.

The conversation continued with the Hispanic Chamber perspective. “We look for opportunities for business,” said Ureste. “We look for opportunities to grow, getting people involved. We are automotive focused as well as focused on healthcare and technology. As those opportunities present themselves, we reach out to those businesses.”

Each ethnic chamber faces its own distinctive challenges.

“There is a growing refugee phobia in the region,” said Manna. “Before 2003, there were 1.5 million Christians living in Iraq. Today many of those have fled and a good portion have ended up here. We have become a resource for others. For instance, we just held a job fair with the Sterling Heights Police Department. We believe that all levels of government and public service agencies should have representation from the communities in which they serve.”
The German community doesn’t see specific hurdles yet needed to learn how to do businesses, “to learn from each other,” said Lemke. “Many companies in America, for instance IT companies, are not that formal. You have to go to someone’s website before you meet with them and try to learn about that company and their culture. I never wear a tie when I meet with IT companies. I am much more casual because I learned that is how they do business.”

Various communities are growing in Metro Detroit. Research shows that U.S.-born Hispanics account for 70 percent of the Hispanic population in United States and the majority of those are 18 and younger. “This is a significant because it shows how our community is growing in the United States, “said Ureste.

Inching up right behind them are the Asian Americans. There are roughly 26.7 million businesses in America and Asians own just shy of 6 percent generating $135 billion in sales.

“There is an uprising in Michigan,” Nguyen said “We are the fastest-growing minority with about 35 percent of the population.”

The APAC moved to Livonia and quickly established a relationship with the Livonia Chamber. Speaking to the political audience in the room, Nguyen urged economic development directors and elected officials to attend chamber events.

“Establishing relationships is important,” Nguyen said. “If your city has a need or interest in bringing in business from different countries, then reach out to the local chamber and come with your homework done. If you are looking to do business with APA, for instance, do your research on inbound Asian companies. Look to see what companies want to locate here.”

Westland Mayor William R. Wild would agree. “My message is to all the cities represented here and something you can perhaps take back to your chambers,” said Wild. “The recession was rough on our cities but it has opened up opportunity for investment and redevelopment in our cities. There are prime properties available. Talk to your members and remind them to look at Southeast Michigan.  Both the cities of Wayne and Westland have seen major investment from the Chaldean community as Martin noted; they are coming in with diverse investments. So call City Hall before you put hard dollars in any investment.  We all have economic development teams hungry for new investments.”

As the luncheon came to an end, the speakers offered their perspective on the event. “This was an excellent opportunity to present the diversity of each chamber to the audience,” said Ureste. “To discuss honestly the opportunities has been great.”

“I encourage everyone to do what Dan [West] has done and invite diversity,” said Lemke. “Someone in each community in a leadership position should attend signature events of each chamber and really listen to the needs of corporate executives.”
“Doing business is a two-way street and Dan has made that two-way street a highway for APAC since we moved into Wayne County and Livonia,” said Nguyen. “We know that Oakland County is huge when it comes to attracting Asian business. Now, I would like to help Dan and the other executives here to build that business in Wayne County. The benefit from being here today is to learn from each other.”

“We are blessed in this region when we talk about the communities we work in,” said Manna. “I have known Dan West for a long time and he has always been reaching out to different ethnic and religious communities so he can get to know them. We may be different ethnically and culturally but we are all going after the same dollar. This event has been helpful. We want to be a resource to you and we are grateful for being welcomed into other communities.”

Survey Will Provide Details on the Growing Community

$

A study to better understand the size and impact of the Chaldean community in Southeast Michigan is underway by the Chaldean Community Foundation (CCF).

This will be the third time in less than a decade that the community is surveyed by the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce. A Household Survey was conducted in 2008, followed by a Business Survey in 2010.

“This survey will measure the number of residents and our economic impact – which is especially important with the arrival of 30,000 refugees since 2007,” said Wendy Acho, director of strategic initiatives for the CCF, which is the charitable arm of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce. “The survey results will prove all that we say about our community’s size and strength, so participation is really pivotal.”

The project is being conducted by well-known demographer Kurt Metzger, who was involved in the previous community surveys, and University of Michigan-Dearborn professors Timothy Davis and Crystal J. Scott.

This month, 3,000 surveys will be sent to Chaldean households throughout Southeast Michigan. Addresses came from a random sampling of parishioners provided by the 12 churches in the Chaldean Diocese, which has endorsed the project. Project leaders hope for a survey return rate of at least 20 percent (600 households) for an accurate sampling.

“We ask you to support and participate in this community project by completing the enclosed survey,” writes Bishop Francis in a letter that accompanies the mailing. “The survey report card will serve as a roadmap to highlight the key areas of economic activity and cultural adaption and acculturation.”

Bishop Francis emphasizes that responses will remain anonymous and that the final report will produce a summary from all responses, not individual answers.

The survey asks questions that include the number of people living in a household, ancestry, income, number of cars owned, what church is attended, kinds of businesses owned and real estate holdings. New this time are basic questions about health such as if anyone has a chronic disease like Crohn’s and colitis.

On May 15, survey leaders visited 11 a.m. mass at Mother of God in a test project. Some parishioners were asked to take the survey on the spot and from there organizers tweaked any questions that were unclear or confusing.

Depending on how fast the completed surveys are returned, results could come as early as the new year.

David Littman, the former chief economist at Comerica Bank, said in the March-April issue of DBusiness that Chaldeans contribute $10.7 billion to Metro Detroit each year.

Najib Karmo’s 1958 Wedding Day

Najib Karmo left his family in Iraq in 1953 to come to the United States. He attended Detroit Institute of Technology and earned his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Through-out the years, Najib was very involved with the Chaldean community. He was a founding member of CIAAM and an essential part of the development of Southfield Manor. He served as President of Southfield Manor for several years. “The Club” was his second home. Najib was a man of dignity and respect.

He was a strong man with integrity and tried to never let another man down. “Thank you Dad for being our shining star, and our rock,” said his daughter Marcine. “We will hold in our heart the memories we have and make sure that your spirit will live on in all of us.” Najb was the husband of the late Norma Karmo, father of Tim (Aian), late Annette, his late grandson Frances and his daughter Marcine.

He was the brother to the late Jamil, late Shaker, late Wadie, late Guslani, and to Ruphail and Noori. Upon his death, Najib was surrounded by his tons of nephews and nieces whom he loved like his own children. “My cousins were so good to my dad and we want them to know how much we appreciate all they have done for our family,” said daughter Marcine.
